What the resort actually is
The casino is one building inside a holiday estate, and that is the most useful thing to know before driving up. The resort opened in 1979 in what was then Bophuthatswana, grew through the 1980s with additional hotels, and took its present shape when the Palace of the Lost City and the Valley of the Waves opened in December 1992. Four hotels now sit on the estate with roughly 1,300 rooms between them, from the five-star Palace down to the family-oriented Cabanas.
For a visitor that means the gaming floor is rarely the whole trip. Two 18-hole golf courses share the property — one of them the championship layout that has hosted an international professional tournament every year since 1981 — along with the water park, a crocodile sanctuary, an arena used for concerts and boxing, restaurants, an arcade and a maze. The Pilanesberg National Park, roughly 570 square kilometres of Big Five reserve, starts at the boundary.

The location is also a piece of history. A short history of the resort
Sun City opened on 7 December 1979 in what was then the nominally independent territory of Bophuthatswana, where casino gambling was permitted while it was prohibited across most of South Africa. The first phase paired a hotel with a casino and an entertainment arena, and the championship golf course followed almost immediately.
The 1980s added hotels and cemented the property as an events destination: an international professional golf tournament has been staged on the championship course every year since 1981, and the arena drew concerts and title fights through the decade. The Cascades opened in 1984, adding a second tier of accommodation to the estate.
The defining expansion arrived on 1 December 1992, when the Palace of the Lost City and the Valley of the Waves water park opened together and turned a casino resort into a themed destination. A second golf course followed in 1993, and the estate has since operated under national gambling legislation rewritten after 1994 and now anchored in the Act of 2004.
